The handful of local things that make Cape Town easy.
Uber and Bolt are cheap, safe and everywhere — the easiest way to get about, and what we'd use after dark. Hiring a car is ideal for the Peninsula and Winelands. The MyCiTi bus covers the Waterfront and Camps Bay corridor well.
The currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Cards work almost everywhere; keep a little cash for markets, tips and car guards. Tipping is around 10–15% in restaurants, and a few Rand for the car guards who watch your car.
South Africa sometimes has scheduled power cuts (“load-shedding”). The EskomSePush app shows the times for our area. The house is set up for it — but it's handy to know when to charge your phone.
Locals say “four seasons in one day,” so pack a light layer even in summer. The summer South-Easter (the “Cape Doctor”) can blow hard, and the sun is fierce — bring good sunscreen and a hat. Plugs are the local three-pin type, so bring a universal adapter.
Cape Town is wonderful, but be city-smart: use Uber or Bolt after dark, don't flash valuables, and only hike Lion's Head or Table Mountain in daylight, ideally with others. Tap water is safe to drink.
